IN THIS BEGINNER'S UPDATE for Home Distillers, we discuss Keeping Your Still Clean.

Our previous Beginners’ Gems posts containing helpful hints, tips and techniques for home distillers, include the following:

Is it important to clean & sanitise my still & equipment?

It is important to clean all stills properly without damaging them with corrosive chemicals.

For example, your 25 litre (6.5 US Gallon) Super Reflux Still is made from Stainless Steel. It is very important that you empty the Still after each use and rinse it out with clean water and then dry it thoroughly.

Do not use corrosive cleaners on your still. Everything used in the fermentation process must be cleaned and sanitised before and after use.

This includes the fermenter, airlock and stirrer.

Do I need to clean my ceramic saddles? How?

Yes it is important every few batches to clean your ceramic saddles found inside the column.

In the case of an Air Still they are used inside the boiler.

These saddles obtain deposits which changes the surface area and do not function efficiently when they are dirty.

For Turbo 500 users, here's an informative video of another method.

I suspect I have a build up of dead yeast cells passing through the column and building up on cooling coils

If this happens, empty the column and separate the copper saddles from the ceramic saddles.

Soak the copper saddles and wash the inside of the column and the main condenser with white vinegar.

Hold column upside down and fill with white vinegar, being careful to hold the end of the spirit outlet above the level of the white vinegar in the column.

Shake gently, then run out through spirit outlet and discard vinegar.

Repeat 3-4 times. Rinse column with water.

Moonshine stills must be kept clean if you want your moonshine to taste good.

Dirty stills can cause all sorts of problems, from off flavours to contamination.

It's important to clean your still regularly and thoroughly to avoid any unwanted problems.

To clean your still, start by taking it apart and removing all of the parts that come in contact with the moonshine.

These parts include the lid, condenser, collection vessel, and hoses. Soak these parts in a solution of hot water and vinegar for at least 30 minutes.

Alternatively, use our World's #1 2-part still cleaner.

Follow the instructions and this will remove any built-up residue.

After soaking, rinse the parts well with hot water. Then, sanitise the parts by soaking them in a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water for at least 5 minutes. Rinse the parts again with hot water before reassembling the still.

Or once again, there's no need to use bleach is you use our World's #1 Still Cleaner.

It's also important to clean the inside of the still itself. The easiest way to do this is to fill the still with hot water and our still cleaner, and follow the instructions.

After soaking, drain the still and rinse it well with hot water.

Be sure to clean your still regularly to keep your moonshine tasting its best!
